    BAKU

Aid donations from Iran were distributed among a number of Karabakh
war refugees here Tuesday afternoon [28 December] in a ceremony
attended by Iranian Ambassador to Baku Afshar Soleymani.

About one million people were forced to leave their homes due to the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict which began in 1988 between the Republic of
Azerbaijan and Armenia. In the early 1990s, tensions between the two
sides took the form of open, armed hostilities.

The donations were from Iran's Imam Khomeyni Relief Committee, which
also undertook the responsibility of distributing them to the refugees
who are sheltered in temporary refugee camps in Azerbaijan.

The Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous enclave is within Azerbaijani
territory and is largely populated by Armenians but does not legally
    constitute a part of Armenia.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Iranian ambassador expressed hope that
peace would quickly be restored in the region allowing all refugees to
    return to their homes.

It was also learned that Soleymani visited the refugee camps in the
autonomous enclave and talked to a number of refugees who complained
of hard living conditions and expressed the wish to return to their
    homes soon.
