    A NATION OF LOWS

AUSTRALIA is slipping far behind Asian countries in maths and science,
    a new global study reveals.

And the rot is setting in early with most Australian Year 8 students
below average on an international maths standard.

The study shows Year 8 science students are slightly above the
international average but lag far behind Asian countries, the US and
England. Even struggling countries such as Armenia and Lithuania are
    doing better.

Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong top the list of nations doing
well in maths and science education.

And culturally comparable countries, such as the US and England,
are doing better on all scales.

The results are from the Trends in International Mathematics and
Science Study of Year 4 and Year 8 students from 49 countries.

More than 230 Australian schools, including 35 in Victoria, took part
    in the study.
