THE FORTH SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE 'NUCLEAR POWER AND ENERGY SECURITY' UNDER THE AUSPICES OF NATO STARTED IN YEREVAN TODAY. SPECIALISTS AND OFFICIALS FROM 14 COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD ARE TAKING PART IN THE CONFERENCE

The leaders of the conference Samvel Apikyan and David Diamond said
at the opening ceremony that the 21-st century is staying against
the unprecedented energy challenges. 'Energy consumption has sharply
grown in the world over the last decades. This growth is conditioned
by several factors: world economy development, growth of the number
of the planet population and improvement of the quality of life. For
this reason we have noticed certain "renaissance" of nuclear power over
the last years. New public opinion is being formed that nuclear power
will become the guarantor of global energy security. and today it is
the best sample to satisfy our growing energy demands', - Apikyan said.
At the same time, as participants in the event said, this "renaissance"
requires resolving of several serious problems, such as: high electric
power price, protection of environment, safety of nuclear power plants
exploitation and improvement of the ways of the long-term storage
of radioactive wastes. They think that resolving these problems will
give an opportunity for the unprecedented development of nuclear power.
