AGLANDJIA GYMNASIUM WILL BE READY BY CHRISTMAS

THE EDUCATION Ministry yesterday confirmed construction works at a
Nicosia district gymnasium, which was closed down following the death
of two workers in 2007, would be completed by Christmas and deemed
safe to take back its students.

If all went according to plan the Aglandjia Gymnasium would be ready
to open its doors to its students by the end of the year, said Andreas
Pattichis, head of the Education Ministry's technical services. In the
meantime the youngsters have been temporarily housed at the Armenian
    School, Melkonian.

In April 2007 parents and students of the gymnasium forced the
Education Ministry to relocate all the children to new premises pending
the conclusion of construction works at the school. The pressure,
including strike measures from the students who refused to go to class,
was exerted following the tragic death of two workers who were buried
alive when the ground gave way

Meanwhile 10 new school buildings will operate at the start of
next month's new academic year in the districts of Paphos, Nicosia
and Larnaca. Specifically the buildings belong to two lyceums and a
gymnasium in Paphos, two primary schools and four nursery schools in
Nicosia and one nursery school in Larnaca.

According to the Education Ministry's technical services building
works are currently underway to erect nine new schools island
wide. Construction works are also being carried out to improve and
    upgrade 25 existing schools.
