Krekorian's Bill to Honor Fallen Peace Officers Passes Legislature

Now heads to governor for his signature

SACRAMENTO - Public safety officers who perish in the line of duty are
now one step closer to getting the recognition they deserve, thanks to
legislation authored by Assistant Majority Leader Paul Krekorian
(D-Burbank) that unanimously passed the Assembly Wednesday.

"Each year, we hear far too many tragic stories of officers killed while
protecting our neighborhoods," Krekorian said. "Last month, we heard the
grim news that Los Angeles County firefighters Fire Captain Tedmund D.
"Ted" Hall, and Fire Fighter Specialist Arnaldo "Arnie" Quinones paid
the ultimate price helping to stem the tide of the Station Fire that
ravaged Southern California. And, last year, we read with great dismay
that LAPD SWAT Officer Randall Simmons gave his life while protecting
one of our neighborhoods. The California Golden Shield will recognize
people like Captain Hall, Specialist Quinones, Officer Simmons and
others by sending a message to all Californians that their sacrifice
will never be forgotten. Though we hope that the award is handed out
rarely, it is important that we have an official California State
vehicle to honor our brave police, firefighters and other public safety
officers who willingly put themselves at risk every day."

The California Golden Shield Act requires that the governor present the
California Golden Shield, on behalf of the State of California, to the
families of the fallen public safety officers killed in the line of
    duty.

While current law provides the opportunity for the Governor to present
the Medal of Valor award to public safety officers for extraordinary
valor above and beyond the call of duty, no official state honorarium
currently exists to honor public safety officers who give their life in
    the name of service.

The bill sailed through the Assembly 55-0 on a concurrence vote and now
heads to the governor for his signature.
