Yerkir Union accuses Georgian Foreign Ministry of spreading allegations

ArmInfo. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia is spreading
allegations on the case of Vahagn Chakhalyan, says the Yerkir Union.
Particularly, during his visit to France on Nov 25 Minister of Foreign
Affairs of Georgia Grigol Vashadze met with members of the Foreign
Affairs Commission of the French National Assembly and was asked by
the head of the France-Armenia Friendship Group Francois Rochebloine
to comment on the situation in Georgia's mostly-Armenian region of
Javakhq.
Particularly, Rochebloine questioned the sentence imposed on Vahagn
Chakhalyan (arrested in July 2009 and sentenced to 10 years in jail)
and the actions of the Georgian Court of Appeal, which kept the
sentence unchanged after just 15-minute discussion. He especially
stressed the fact that Chakhalyan was denied the right to hire a
French lawyer.
In response, Vashadze said that Chakhalyan was arrested on a very
serious charge - transfer of information to a third state. He refused
to specify the state.
The Yerkir Union believes that the above charge is an absolute lie as,
initially, Chakhalyan was accused of keeping arms. Later, he was
charged with organizing of mass disorders and committing illegal
actions against the police.
Considering the fact that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia
is spreading such allegations in other international organizations
too, the Yerkir Union urges all international structures concerned for
the problem of Javakheti Armenians to attentively follow this case and
to raise this question whenever meeting with Georgian officials.
