Azeri journalists express protest to Euronews over report on Nagorno-
    Karabakh

    BAKU Dec 15

The Azerbaijan Press Council made a statement on Monday, expressing
its protest over what according to Azeri journalists was a biased
report on Nagorno-Karabakh shown by Euronews.

"Unfortunately, the visit by the television channel's staff to
Nagorno-Karabakh, which is an integral part of Azerbaijan, and not
only the subjectiveness of their report, but also the bias and
one-sidedness, as well as the open demonstration of the political
position do not match the standards for civilized press," the
statement said. "The demonstration of such a report creates an
impression that it serves the intentions of an organization called
European Friends of Armenia, and therefore Armenia itself," the
    statement said.

The Karabakh talks have entered an intensive stage, and "the emergence
of similar negative trends in the media outlets in several countries
during this sensitive period can been seen as a sleazy campaign aimed
at compounding the peace process," the Press Council said. "We would
not want any suspicions to arise in relation to the participation by
the global television channel such as Euronews in this sort of
    campaign," the statement said.

The report presents Nagorno-Karabakh as a unique region with an
allegedly attractive Armenian culture, as well as an "independent
state" and its leader as the "president," while making no attempts to
find out the opinion on this matter from Azeri people, and that is an
unfair position which is in conflict with the journalistic standards
and may damage the reputation of Euronews itself, the Azeri Press
    Council said.
