YEREVAN, April 7. /ARKA/. Circulation of medicaments in Armenia was
about $70 million in 2009, said Emil Gabrielyan, Director of Center
of Expertise of Medicaments and Medical Technologies.

"Recently this indicator is significantly increasing. For example,
last year circulation of medicaments was about $50 million", said
    Gabrielyan.

    These are mainly imported medicaments.

"The share of medicaments produced in Armenia is about 5-7%", he said.

The Center follows the policy of circulation of medicaments in domestic
market, produced by the leading and experienced international companies
which are important from the point of view of quality and security.

"Today we cooperate with about 300 companies, medicaments of which
are realized in the Armenian market", said Gabrielyan.

Currently about 3700 names of medicaments are registered in Armenia.

Since 1980 World Health Organization (WHO) developed conception
of main (essential) medicaments, the list of which includes about
    270-300 names.

According to the Convention of main medicaments, optimal (effective
and secure) treatment can be implemented by significantly less quantity
of medicaments and minimum expenses in pharmaceutical sphere.

"These medicaments can provide about 96% of diseases. Doctors focus
on deeper study of these medicaments and their correct usage," he said.

The Center was established in 1992 in accordance with WHO
recommendations as an independent organization having administrative,
financial and technical resources which reports to the Armenian
Ministry of Health. The main goal of the Center is implementation of
national medicament policy targeted at the provision of availability
of secure, effective and qualified medicaments in Armenia.
