Turkish Envoy arrives in Baku from Yerevan with 'positive luggage'

    2010-04-10 13:55:00

ArmInfo-TURAN: Feridun Sinirlioglu, special envoy from the Turkish
Foreign Ministry, has arrived in Baku today from Yerevan after
meetings with Armenian president Serzh Sargsian. While in Yerevan,
Sinirlioglu gave the Armenian president a letter from the Turkish
premier, saying that Turkey would be committed to the protocols signed
in Zurich, and is ready to display the political will to advance
Turkish-Armenian relations, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported.

Baku distrusts Armenia's readiness to improve Turkish relations
however, because Armenia expects the international community to
recognize the Armenian genocide, and "is unwilling to accept the
Madrid principles for resolving the Karabakh conflict," Turan reports.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu informed his Azerbaijani
counterpart of Sinirlioglu's meetings in Yerevan. Sinirlioglu
characterized the meetings with President Sargsian as quite positive.
The ministers also exchanged opinions on the upcoming meeting between
the Armenian and Turkish leaders in Washington. Erdogan and Sargsian
will meet as part of the Global Nuclear Summit in Washington on April
    12-13.

Ahmet Davutoglu said he hopes for full normalization of relations with
Armenia. The protocols on normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations
were signed in Zurich on October 10, 2009, by the Armenian and Turkish
foreign ministers, Edward Nalbandian and Ahmet Davutoglu. The two
countries had to reestablish diplomatic relations and open the
Armenian-Turkish border, which has been closed since 1993. The
agreement was signed in the presence of the foreign ministers of
France, USA, Russia and Switzerland, which are continuing their
efforts to mediate between the two sides.
