Margaret Sekaggyan, special rapporteur on the status of UN Human
Rights Defenders, to implement her first mission in Armenia

YEREVAN, MAY 11, ARMENPRESS: Margaret Sekaggyan, special rapporteur on
the status of UN Human Rights Defenders, will implement June 14-18 her
first mission in Armenia. UN Armenia office told Armenpress that this
will be the first visit of the UN Human Rights Ambassador since 2000.

    M. Sekaggyan, who will pay visit to Armenia at the invitation of the
government, noted that the last review of the general periodical
report of the Human Rights Council gives a good opportunity of

    apply in future.

`The goal of the mission is to assess the situation of human rights
defenders in the country in an unbiased way and to undertake a process
of constructive cooperation with authorities,' M. Sekaggyan said.

For gathering information the rapporteur will meet with state
officials, representatives of legislative and judicial branches, with
wide circle of civil society, press, UN agencies, with representatives
of regional organizations and with the diplomatic corpus. A press
conference concluding the visit of the special rapporteur to Armenia
will take place June 18 in in the hall of UN summits, Yerevan. The
final report will be presented at 2011 Human Rights Council.

Judge of Uganda Margaret Sekaggyan has been appointed special
rapporteur by the Human Rights Council and is independent from any
