A festival of Azerbaijani films is to open in Armenia tomorrow and
    run until Thursday.

The festival is organized by the Caucasus Centre for Peace-Making
Initiatives, with the support of the US embassy.

An event page for the festival was created on Facebook and whipped
    up a storm of criticism.

Some Facebook users even threatened festival organizer Georgi Vanyan
and Facebook page writer Lusine Vayachyan, describing them as traitors
    to their nation.

US embassy spokeswoman Karen Robblee explained the embassy's support
for the festival to Armenian website Epress.am

"We understand this film festival aims to promote an appreciation
for tolerance, multiculturalism and the expression of diverse views
    and opinions," Robblee said.

"These are important values for any democratic society. We thought
the film festival was a good idea when we decided to support it and
    we still do."

Asked whether the festival would be postponed or even cancelled
completely, Robblee said they hoped that won't happen.

"We expect the project to go forward as planned," she said.
