WALTHAM STATE REP. KOUTOUJIAN REPORTEDLY TO BE NAMED NEW MIDDLESEX SHERIFF

Governor Deval Patrick is expected to announce appointment this
afternoon.
State Representative Peter Koutoujian, D-Waltham, will be appointed as
the new Middlesex County Sheriff later today, according to a source in
the sheriff's office. The move was first reported by WCVB-TV. Governor
Deval Patrick is expected to make the official announcement this
afternoon at the Cambridge District Courthouse, located in Medford

Koutoujian, 49, will replace former Sheriff James DiPaola, who
committed suicide in a Maine hotel room in November. Koutoujian
currently occupies Middlesex County's 10th district seat.
The governor's office did not immediately return calls to confirm
Koutoujian's appointment.
Voters re-elected Koutoujian to the Massachusetts House of
Representatives for an eighth term in November. He represents the
10th Middlesex District, which includes Waltham and parts of Watertown
and Newton.
Koutoukian earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Bridgewater
State College, received law degree from the New England School of Law.
He is a life-long Waltham resident, and lives in the city with his
wife, Elizabeth Creda Koutoujian, and the couple's three children.
Koutoukian is a vocal advocate for the Armenian-American community,
and was the lead sponsor of the Armenian Genocide Commemoration. He
spearheaded the effort to create the Armenian Heritage Park, which
will be built in the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway.
Outside of his political duties, Koutoujian works as an attorney and
an adjunct professor of American government and political science at
Bentley University.
He also serves as the House Chairman of the Joint Committee on
Financial Services, and is a graduate of Harvard's Kennedy School of
Government, where he earned a master's degree in public administration.
