ARMENIA : CARMAC Project for Armenia
Armenian agricultural minister Sergo Karapetian said that part of a
new World Bank loan will make use to aid Armenian livestock breeding
farmers to make cooperatives. The World Bank Board of Executive
Directors has approved a US$ 16 million credit for the Community
Agricultural Resource Management and Competitiveness (CARMAC) Project
for Armenia. It will pick up productivity and sustainability of
pasture-based livestock farms in 55 mountainous communities by rising
milk production, enhancing pasture management, and boosting farm sales
of livestock products. The CARMAC project will help to overcome major
obstacles for these activities, as well as unsustainable pasture
management and underutilization, persistent diseases, processing and
marketing constraints.
The minister said that, pastures on approximately 1.1 million hectares
are not used now because of the short of normal infrastructure, as
well as roads, water. The CARMAC will solve all these issues. CARMAC
comes under the government s big attempt to conquer and reverse a main
turn down in agriculture met previous year. That was mainly because of
adverse weather circumstances. Last year, the sector, which comprise
about one-fifth of Armenia s GDProduct came down by more than 14
percent.
The World Bank said that, the project activities are clustered in the
poorer mountainous areas of the country, where pasture resource
degradation is acute. Overall, 55 villages in six regions with a total
population of around 78,000 will benefit from the project.
Total financing of the Project is US$ 21.33 million, in that the
government of Armenia will finance US$ 5.33 million. The IDA credit
holds a maturity of 20 years with a grace period of 10 years.
