ARMENIA : Government sets to invest $52 million for Armenian Fruits Company

Agricultural minister Sergo Karapetian told a Cabinet session that
approximately $52 million will invest to create Armenian Fruits
Company. His declaration came prior to the government approved a
proposal to ink an agreement with the International Fund for
Agricultural Development (IFAD) to finance an agricultural capacities
    to fortify the project.

The minister said that IFAD will give $13.5 million of the amount, $20
million will be given by OPEC Development Fund, the government of
Denmark will give $3.5 million to cover consultation services,
beneficiaries will allot $3 million and $11 million will be a
government co-financing. The minister said that the program will help
to reduce poverty level in rural communities. The program aims at
helping farmers to raise their incomes and living standards by
planting new orchards. He said that the company may be privatized in
    future.

The planned company will handle the whole cycle from import of young
fruit trees to sale of fruits, as well as processing, storage and
sorting. The major focus will be on growing fruits and nuts. The
program will be obtainable to farmers whose orchards do not go beyond
2 hectares. The five-year program will get start in autumn in Tavush,
Vayots Dzor and Aragatsotn provinces. Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian
highlighted this program as its major aim is to make institutional
structures in agricultural sector. "We applied a different policy in
the past by providing financial assistance to farming regions, but the
land under crops continued to dwindle. This suggests that by
distributing money we can not help the sector rise. This is why we
need formation of new institutional structures, he said.
