'Azerbaijan will not let Armenia participate in Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project'
    Fri 03 June 2011 11:03 GMT | 14:03 Local Time

Azerbaijan will not let Armenia to participate in regional projects,
    involving Azerbaijan, including Baku-Tbilisi-Kars.
It says in a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan.

Georgian ambassador to Armenia Tengiz Sharmanashvili, speaking to
press conference in Yerevan on 31 May, said it is important that
    Armenia joins Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway.

He noted that Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, designed to deliver oil to
Europe through Turkey, is "promising in economic terms."

"However, we are not going to question the relations with Armenia
because of these economic prospects," stressed Sharmanashvili, noting
that Georgia has repeatedly announced that it will never agree to the
    blockade of Armenia.

Asked whether the Armenian side can use this railway for freight and
passenger traffic to Europe, the ambassador replied in affirmative.

`They can not set conditions for us on how to use the railway located
in our country. This will be an open road, and it will be used by all
economic actors who will conclude relevant agreements," Sharmanashvili
said adding that "if you ever allow anyone to interfere in your policy
this way, others will want to do the same thing, so we will not allow
    it to happen."

However, the Foreign Ministry statement shows that Sharmanashvili has
clearly overestimated his own influence on this process.

Armenia's participation in a project funded by the Azerbaijan is
    impossible, the Foreign Ministry stated.
