ARMENIAN TO DEVELOP MOTOR FREIGHT BETWEEN ASIA AND EUROPE

YEREVAN, June 14. / ARKA /. Armenian ministry of transport and
communications and the International Road Transport Union (IRU) signed
today in Yerevan a Memorandum of Understanding on the development
of motor freight between Asia, Europe and the world's major markets
across the territory of Armenia.
"I am sure that this memorandum will become another impetus for the
development of road transport through the territory of Armenia", said
Armenian minister of transport and communication Manuk Vardanian during
a meeting of the IRU's committee for relations with Eurasian countries.
Speaking to journalists the minister explained that the signing
of this document will help further improve the related legislative
framework, promote the road safety, obtain various permits, as well
as international cooperation.
"We are in a specific geographical location, and therefore we are
interested in resolving any issue relating to road transport,"
Vardanian said.
In turn, the IRU Secretary General Martin Marmy noted that the road
transport as well as aviation are most regulated areas.
"We can assist various countries and their ministries to facilitate
the crossing of borders", he said.
The main purpose of IRU, founded in 1948, is the development of land
transport and protection of interests of operators. The Union members
are more than 170 transport associations in 74 countries around the
world. Armenia joined the IRU in 1999.
