The price of sugar in Yerevan is up by 25%. Nobody knows what price
will be set in the regions. Member of Parliament Samvel Alexanyan
imports almost 100% of sugar consumed in Armenia. And this member
of parliament who runs a big chain of supermarkets in Yerevan,
Yerevan City, explained that the price of sugar went up because the
    international price went up.

Samvel Alexanyan said till today the price was low in Armenia because
they sold the consignment bought for the lower price. Now the new
consignment for a higher price has been imported, which is sold for
    a higher price.

Although the society does not have a good opinion on the intellectual
abilities of oligarchs of Armenia, it should be noted for the
sake of justice that the abilities of most of them are enough
to learn a few phrases by heart and utter them on one occasion
or another. And importantly, so far they have never mixed up the
occasions and phrases. At least, whenever they raise the prices,
they repeat fluently that the international price went up, and they
have to raise the price in Armenia.

It is a great excuse because every now and then prices in the world
go up, and one can always say one sells sugar bought in the given year
when the international price went up. And when the price of a product
on the international market goes up by 20% or 30%, or at least 50%,
the oligarchs of Armenia conclude that in Armenia the retail price of
each kg must go up that much. In other words, the importer oligarchs
want to get as much profit from each kg as he pays for each ton of
wholesale sugar. In the meantime, elementary logic is that if prices
of products go up on the international market, the retail price in
    Armenia must go up slightly.

Of course, it depends on what part of Armenia's economy depends on
economic rules and what part of the economy depends on the caprice
    of the importer oligarchs.

In addition, not just the economy but the system of government and the
state must be considered. It was the head of this state Serzh Sargsyan
who instructed the government in March to take steps to reduce prices.

He said he expected the commission for the protection of economic
cooperation to engage in this process, and the officials to understand
the process of markup of products, especially consumer goods, the
wholesale price, transportation, retail price,in order to control
    importers.

In fact, Samvel Alexanyan gave a nice gift to Serzh Sargsyan, if we
consider the rising price of sugar in the context of the consultation
in March. Apparently, Samvel Alexanyan is bolder than Serzh Sargsyan
or the government. At least, the prices of consumer goods grow,
and these products are imported by Samvel Alexanyan.

Will Serzh Sargsyan be bolder and demand bold solutions from the
government or personally take bold solutions to ensure real competition
    in the country?

Whenever legislative remedies are mentioned in this connection, it is
an effort to escape the reality. In Armenia, the government mechanisms
are sufficient to ensure competition in Armenia, it takes political
will to enforce laws and destroy the oligopoly. It is another question
that Serzh Sargsyan will not dare act against the oligarchy on the
eve of the elections. In time of speaking, he faces the society but
when the time of action comes, he turns his back to the society but
    continues to face the oligarchy.
