The Armenian Relief Society of Western USA held a fundraising event
at its regional headquarters in Glendale on Aug. 14 in which the
organization raised more than $15,000 for domestic violence outreach
    objectives.

It was the first such fundraising event the Armenian Relief Society
has ever held to address domestic violence.

The Armenian Relief Society Shelter coordinated with local
organizations' shelters such as Door of Hope and the YWCA. The Armenian
Relief Society Shelter Committee Chair Aida Babayan presented a report
on the society's outreach program addressing domestic violence and
discussed the establishment of a telephone hotline service.

Osheen Keshishian, a professor at Glendale Community College, served
as the keynote speaker. He discussed case studies, cited potential
causes of domestic violence and stressed the essential need for
    domestic violence outreach.

The Rev. Fr. Ardak Demirjian offered his blessings and encouragement.

Maestro Hovsep Torossian played the keyboard to entertain the dinner
guests as soprano Alice Haroutounian accompanied him with widely
    cherished Armenian songs.

Chairwoman Nyree Derderian represented the regional executive board
of the Armenian Relief Society when she thanked the donors for their
contribution to the society's outreach goals.

Several community leaders attended the event. Among them included
Vicky Marashlian, chairwoman of the Armenian Relief Society, and
Nova Hindoyan, member of the Armenian Relief Society's executive
board. Apo Boghigian, editor of the Asbarez newspaper, was there
along with Carol Ann Burton, chairwoman of the YWCA. Chairwoman of
the Commission on the Status of Women in Glendale, Paula Devine, was
present along with Liz Mirzayan, chairwoman of Glendale's chapter of
    Soroptimist International.

    Woman's club holds tasteful event

The La Crescenta Woman's Club held a wine tasting event in early
    August.

The event was held at the Wine Cave in Montrose where members played
games and earned prizes as they enjoyed wine and appetizers.

Ellie Pipes answered correctly when she said that Josepy Hawkins
became the club's first president in 1911.

Funds raised from the event will benefit one of the club's charities.
