The UN Department of Public Information Office in Armenia, in
cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, organized a Model
UN Conference simulation of the Caucasus Regional Meeting of the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on the theme "Reduction
of green-house gases in the Caucasus as a result of multilateral
regional cooperation." The conference was held today in Yerevan.

The conference is organized in the framework of the International
Year of Forests. Some 50 students represented UN Member States and
partner international organizations simulating the work of the UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change. They prepared their countries'
and/or organizations' positions on the topic of the Conference.

Vahram Kajoyan, Head of the Department of International Organizations
of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the participants with
warm words. He appreciated the challenge that the students have taken
simulating such a complicated topic but which is very relevant to
the current situation of the region. He voiced hope that both in
the course of preparation and the conference itself will give an
invaluable experience to all - learning about the United Nations and
    the world environmental hot issues.

Armineh Haladjian, UN DPI Officer in Charge, said: "I am impressed
how enthusiastic the participants were during the whole process of
preparation. I am sure the students had a unique opportunity not
only to learn more about the procedures and mandates of the UN, its
values and goals, but also improved their negotiation, communication
and consensus-building skills, which will help them to be more active
    participants in the society."

Prior to the Conference, three training sessions were held to educate
the participants on the UN, the functions and structure of the UNFCCC
as well as its Rules of Procedures. Experienced trainers and thematic
experts guided the participants' research and distributed specially
    designed guidelines.

The respective embassies/organizations operating in Armenia supported
the participants in the research and briefed the students providing
them with information that assisted the delegates in properly
representing the respective counties' and/or organizations' positions
    on this significant issue.
