AZG: SPIRITUAL LEADER'S 'DIFFERENT' STATEMENT IN BAKU

    Tert.am
    30.11.11

Sabir Gasanli, assistant to Grand Mufti of the Caucasus Allahshukur
Pashazade, made an interesting statement on returning from Yerevan
to Baku as a member of the Azeri "religious delegation."

"Patriarch Kirill supported Azerbaijan's position on Nagorno-Karabakh.
We could feel it at all the meetings in Yerevan."

In contrast to the Armenian side, the Azerbaijani side has repeatedly
stated "its readiness and ability to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh
problem in a military way." Moreover, "Baku is running out of patience,
which implies that Azerbaijan will get its lands back by means of war."

Interestingly, even Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is making
similar statements. Therefore, Azerbaijan's position is actually
    this one.

What is more, when UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the OSCE
Minsk Group co-chairs, as well as the international community, have
repeatedly urged the sides to withdraw snipers from the front line,
some "Arazazimov" or "Gasanov" in Azerbaijan said that withdrawing
snipers is not a solution ~V return of Azeri lands is.

This means that Azerbaijan will not withdraw snipers only to present
a military threat. This is a component of Azerbaijan's position on
    Nagorno-Karabakh as well.

However, the Armenian, Russian and Azeri spiritual leaders made a
joint statement in Yerevan. According to them, they are "staunch
supporters of exclusively peaceful and legal settlements of current
problems." Moreover, in their statement the spiritual leaders call for
assistance to integration in the post-soviet area, which would involve
all the sections of population, including national minorities. The
statement also indicates the need for care for refugees and displaced
    persons.

With respect to the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, the spiritual leaders
call on the sides to agree on the withdrawal of snipers from the
frontline and place the responsibility for honoring international
    commitments on the side.

Of interest is the following statement: "Sharing the concern over
destructions of historical and cultural monuments, we state our
intention to do our utmost to preserve the cultural heritage of the
    peoples' in the region."

On the first day of the CIS Interfaith Council's meeting in Yerevan,
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan expressed his concern over the
destruction of cultural monuments ~V Armenian ones, of course.

At his meeting with the Armenian leader, Allahshukur Pashazade
stated that at his private meetings with Azerbaijani President Ilham
Aliyev, he stresses the impossibility of a military solution to the
    Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

So what could Mr. Sabir Gasanli "feel"?
