On November 30th, U.S. Ambassador John Heffern and the U.S. Embassy
Office of Defense Cooperation joined Vedi Maternity Clinic Director
Vachik Matevosyan and Vedi Maternity staff to conduct a ribbon cutting
ceremony in honor of the renovation of the second floor of the Vedi
    Maternity Hospital.

The U.S. European Command Office of Defense Cooperation Humanitarian
Assistance program project included renovation of walls, floors,
installation of new windows and doors, new heating and electrical
systems, construction of a boiler room as well as the provision of
a back-up generator to provide emergency power.

Total value of this renovation is $230,000. A local Armenian
construction company, CESCO Corporation has worked over the past ten
months in renovating this facility. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
oversaw all aspects of the project from initial development through
contract negotiations to quality assurance inspections.

The hospital serves 13,000 women in Ararat District with 800 annual
deliveries. Now that renovations are completed, the second floor will
be designated as one of the premier maternity centers in the southern
area of the Republic of Armenia.
