TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTRY DENOUNCES ARMENIAN GENOCIDE BILL

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has sharply condemned the decision of the
French Senate, which on Monday night approved a bill criminalizing
denial of Armenian genocide. The ministry announced that France's
decision would lead to loss of strategic partner. Ankara is considering
possible downscaling of the status of diplomatic relations with Paris.
In December, the document envisioning imprisonment for a term of up
to a year or a fine of 45,000 euros, was approved by the National
Assembly. At the time Turkey similarly condemned the parliamentarians'
decision, recalling its ambassador in Paris for consultations.
Now the bill must be signed within 15 days by French President
Nicolas Sarkozy.
