ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT APPROVES ARMENIA'S AGREEMENT WITH
    JAPANESE JBIC

YEREVAN, MAY 25. ARMINFO. The Armenian Parliament approved today the
agreement on the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation lending
Armenia $150.2 mln for modernizing the Yerevan thermal power plant.

This project will allow Armenia to save $19 mln on natural gas a
year, Deputy Energy Minister of Armenia Ara Simonyan said today while
presenting the relevant Armenian-Japanese agreement for the
    parliament's approval.

The economy will be ensured by modern technologies. The JBIC loan
will be used for the construction of a new 200-210 MW power unit of
combined cycle. Simonyan says that to produce 1 KW/h both the Yerevan
and Hrazdan thermal power plants presently consume 371-372 g of
conventional fuel while the new unit will use only 178 g - at worst
226 g. The Yerevan TPP will work for 7,000 h a year and will produce
1.4-1.5 bln KW/h. To compare, last year whole Armenia produced 6 bln
    kw/h.

The above project is directly connected with the construction of the
Iran-Armenia gas pipeline - Armenia will pay for Iranian gas in
    electricity produced by the Yerevan TPP - 3 kw/h for 1 c m. Presently
the Yerevan TPP works at 50 MW and ensures 1/6 of Armenia's total
electricity output. The new unit is to be finished by 2008. The JBIC
loan is given for 40 years at 0.75% with the grace period of 10
    years.
