SINGER KEVORK HADJIAN GRATIFIES CATHEDRAL AUDIENCE

On Wednesday April 11, Tenor Kevork Hadjian gave an inspired
performance at St. Illuminators Cathedral under the auspices and the
attendance of His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan. Bishop
Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar, and Rev. Nareg Terterian, pastor of
St. Sarkis Church of Douglaston, NY also attended, as well as close to
an audience of one hundred, who, despite short notice, came to enjoy a
wonderful night of Armenian music. Mr. Hadjian was accompanied by
Raisa Kagramanova, a Russia-born young pianist who has won many
international competitions and is currently in the Artist Diploma
Program of the Long Island Conservatory of Music.

Tenor Kevork Hadjian was invited from Armenia by St. Illuminators
Cathedral to direct the choir for Holy Week services. As part of
Mr. Hadjians short sojourn in New York, Rev. Mesrob Lakissian, pastor
of St. Illuminators Cathedral, organized the recital. After
introductory words by Rev. Lakissian and Ms. Seta Balmanoukian on
behalf of the organizers, the audience was treated to a select program
of Armenian religious, folkloric, and patriotic songs which
Mr. Hadjian render with equal mastery. Many classics, some of them in
new arrangements by late Archbishop Zareh Aznavourian and composer
Daniel Yerazhisht from Armenia, together with less known songs,
delighted the audience during the two-hour recital. Mr. Hadjian, an
effortless and sensitive singer, closed his performance with a moving
version of Horovel, the work song of the Armenian farmer.

A deacon of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Mr. Hadjian was born in
1971 in Anjar (Lebanon), where he grew up. He studied and graduated
from Antelias seminary from 1984-1992. He has had a prolific career in
music and resides in Yerevan since 2005 with his wife and son. He is a
graduate of the Gomidas Conservatory (2005-2009) and is currently
pursuing a Masters degree in academic solo singing. He has also
released three CDs of Armenian sacred and traditional folk music.

    BIBLE READINGS

    Bible readings for Sunday, April 15, New Sunday, are: Luke 4:14-30;
    Acts 5:31-6:7; James 3:1-12; John 1:1-17; John 21:5-25; Matthew
    27:50-61; John 20:26-31

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being
through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has
come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all
people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not
    overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a
witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through
him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the
light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the
    world.

He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet
the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own
people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed
in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born,
not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of
    God.

And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his
glory, the glory as of a fathers only son, full of grace and
truth. (John testified to him and cried out, This was he of whom I
said, He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before
me. ) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The
law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus
    Christ. (John 1:1-17)

    NEW SUNDAY

This Sunday, April 15, is New Sunday (Nor Kiraki). Easter Sunday is
followed by a period of fifty days (Hinoonk) during which there are no
fasting days or saints days. This period from the Resurrection to
Pentecost (Hogegaloost) is dedicated to the glorification of the
Resurrection. Each of the seven Sundays of Hinoonk has a special name.
This Sunday, the first Sunday after Easter, is called New Sunday,
since the first day of the week through Christs Resurrection became
consecrated and Sunday became a dominical day. It is also called
Second Easter (Grgnazadig), which literally means Easter repeated,
because it is the eighth day of Easter and a day similar to Easter.

Today, you new peoples, with the heavenly and radiant angels let us
sing to the renewer of the human race who died and arose for us,
saying: May your resurrection be glorified.

Today, sons of Sion, born sons of God by grace in the font for the
renewal for the tomb, saying: May your resurrection be glorified.

Children of faith, celebrating today the feast of Jerusalem on high,
renew the garment of your souls and with the sons of light of the new
Sion bless Christ the King, saying: May your resurrection be
    glorified.
(Prayer for New Sunday from the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian
    Church)
