ENVIRONMENTALIST: KEY REASON WHY ADDITIONAL WATER IS RELEASED FROM LAKE SEVAN IS THE FEAR THAT LAKE'S RISING WATER MAY COVER HOUSES AND RESTAURANTS OF SOME PEOPLE

Lake Sevan is our national symbol and our salvation, Chairman of the
Public Council's Agriculture and Environment Committee, Deputy Chairman
of the Sevan Committee Yuri Javadyan said during a press-conference
on Thursday.
He said that the law allows releasing from the lake no more than
170mln c m of irrigation water a year. "But this year because of high
temperature and low precipitation we have run short of water and were
forced to take additional 150mln c m," Javadyan said.
President of the Association of Consumers Armen Poghosyan said that
low precipitation and high temperature were just a pretext. "The real
reason why you are releasing more water from Sevan is your fear that
the lake's rising water may cover the houses and restaurants of some
people," he said.
According to the government's program by 2029 the level of Sevan will
grow by 6 meters. In 1993-2002 the level of the lake dropped by over
19 meters, in 2002-2012 it rose by just 4 meters.
