EXPERT: AGRICULTURE IN ARMENIA IS REGRESSING, FARMERS ARE SLIDING INTO POVERTY AND VILLAGERS ARE LEAVING

The agriculture in Armenia is in an extremely critical situation as
farmers are protesting and villagers are leaving, Sargis Sedrakyan,
Head of Farmer Movement NGO, told media, Wednesday.

While the Agriculture Ministry is reporting progress and stability,
the situation is aggravating. "I can see no positive shifts. The
sector is regressing, farmers are sliding into poverty and villagers
are leaving," Sedrakyan said. He said that all the agriculture
ministers must be brought responsible; instead they are offered higher
positions. Sedrakyan said that the agricultural sector needs a serious
government approach to meet the new challenges and develop.

Earlier on Tuesday, Hrach Berberyan, Head of the Armenian Agrarian
Peasants' Union NGO, levered harsh criticism at the authorities. He
told media that nearly 8%-10% of total wheat crops in Armenia have
been lost already due to "elite" sorts of seeds imported from Russia.

So, the country lost already 20,000 tons of wheat crops, Tuesday.

"It is a professional mistake. Professionals and not randoms must be
engaged in the sphere," he said and recalled that 6 out of 8 sorts
of seeds imported from Russia had not been submitted to expertise,
which contradicts the legislation of Armenia. In this light, he denied
the statement by the agriculture ministry saying that the reason of
the low crops is violation of agronomic conditions by farmers.
