NATO SECRETARY GENERAL TO CONVEY HIS CONCERN TO AZERBAIJANI PRESIDENT

"I'm deeply concerned by Azerbaijan's decision to pardon Ramil Safarov,
because that decision damages trust," NATO Secretary General Anders
Fogh Rasmussen said at a joint press conference with Armenian President
Serzh Sargsyan in Yerevan. Mr. Rasmussen added he will convey this
message to Azerbaijan's President during his visit to Baku tomorrow.
The Secretary General added that "the incident that took place eight
years ago was a crime, and such a crime should not be pardoned."
NATO Secretary General left several posts on his Twitter page before
the meeting with the Armenian President.
"NATO and Armenia are valuable partners. We have an opportunity to
build an even stronger partnership for the future."
"There must be no return to conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Tensions must be reduced and steps taken to promote regional
cooperation and reconciliation."
"The pardoning of officer Safarov by Azerbaijan damages trust and
doesn't contribute to the peace process"
"I am deeply concerned by the Azerbaijani decision to pardon officer
Safarov. The act he committed was terrible crime and should not
be glorified."
"We need to break down old barriers of mistrust in South Caucasus,
build new bridges of reconciliation."
"Armenia is an important partner to NATO. We value highly your
contributions to our operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo."
After talks with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan in Yerevan, the
Secretary General thanked Armenia for its strong contribution to
NATO-led operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo, which strengthen the
country's own peace-keeping capabilities.
He also highlighted NATO's support for Armenia's defence reforms,
civil defence and disaster relief efforts, stressing that NATO and
Armenia have already achieved a lot: "Armenia is a valuable partner
for NATO and NATO is a valuable partner for Armenia. We now have an
opportunity to build an even stronger partnership for the future. It's
an opportunity we must seize because we all have to gain and so does
the region as a whole."
