OPPOSITION MP PROPOSES NEW AD HOC COMMITTEE ON MAR 1 EVENTS IN ARMENIA'S CAPITAL

Gagik Jhangiryan, an MP of the Armenian National Congress (ANC)
opposition bloc, has proposed an initiative to set up an ad hoc
committee to investigate the murders on March 1, 2008.

Talking to Tert.am he stated his intention to elaborate on his
initiative at a press conference in Armenia's parliament at 2:00pm,
    on Wednesday.

Irrespective of the ANC's attitude to the opinion by the ad hoc
committee that investigated the March 1-2 events, the committee was
    set up and worked.

In this context, Jhangiryan noted that the new committee is expected
to deal with servicemen, policemen and civilians injured during
    the events.

Talking to Tert.am, David Harutyunyan, Chairman of the Standing
Committee on State and Legal Affairs, Parliament of Armenia, said
that he does not see any constitutional restrictions.

With respect to advisability of such a committee, Harutyunyan said:
"It is another problem. I am completely unaware of Mr Jhangiryan's
proposal. So I cannot speak of this."

Talking to Tert.am, Samvel Nikoyan, ex-chairman of the ad hoc
committee, said he considers Jhangiryan's initiative "normal."
