THE SCHOOL OF VARANDA IS SHORT OF TEXTBOOKS

The learners of Varanda village school of Martouni region are short
    of textbooks.

According to headmaster Naira Ulubabyan this year teachers somehow
managed to acquire the missing books.

"For the lack of textbooks two pupils have to use one book. But this
is not new to us. Not only our school faces this problem. We do our
best to improve the situation," the headmaster reported.

We tried to find out the reason for the shortage of books from head of
the department of science and education at the Ministry of Science and
Education Raya Mousayelyan who said that every year schools present
the lists of their pupils to the education department of the region
according to which the Ministry distributes the corresponding quantity
of books to the schools. "As for resettlement areas which host new
inhabitants during the year there are always certain differences
between the number of learners and their list presented at the
beginning of the year. In this case the school headmaster should once
again apply to the department of education of the region and we shall
try to collect the required textbooks and render them to the school,"
    Raya Mousayelyan noted.

The school of Varanda has not had a library so far and only this
year they have acquired some fiction books. Up to now the required
literature has been taken from the libraries of the neighbouring
    Mushkapat and Haghorti villages.

"We had an old computer for our lessons of Information Science which is
now out of order to say nothing of the Internet connection. Several
days ago I had to go to Martouni to post an e-mail letter to the
Armenian Education Institution," N. Ulubabyan states.

The headmaster feels happy only about the reconstruction of the school
building which was sponsored by the Armenian Education Institution.

The school building, however, is quite small, there is hardly enough
room for the learners, though it does not have so many pupils. "We
applied to regional administration head of Martouni Nelson Stepanyan
recently and asked him to assist us in the construction of the
staff room. He assured that this year a new complex was going be
built in Varanda where both the community administration and the
school would be situated. There has so far been no building for the
community administration in the village," N. Ulubabyan reported in
    her interview to us.

The school has been functioning since 2001 and the 9-year school
has only 14 pupils who continue their education in the neighbouring
villages or in the regional administration centre.
