OPPOSITION CANDIDATES MAY JOINT EFFORTS IN PRESIDENTIAL RUN-OFF - ARMENIA-BASED HERITAGE PARTY REP

Armen Martirosyan, authorized representative of Chairman of the
Heritage party Raffi Hovannisian, one of the candidates in the
upcoming presidential election in Armenia, believes that the opposition
candidates may join their efforts in a presidential run-off.

"I understand the desire for a joint opposition candidate, but I
think it is possible in case a presidential run-off takes place,"
    Mr Martirosyan told Tert.am.

He also responded to Aram Harutyunyan, leader of the National Concord
party and one of the presidential candidates, who claimed Raffi
    Hovannisian is a government-sponsored candidate.

"I am sure that society understands this is nothing but a process of
    discrediting a rival," he said.

The Heritage party and its leader has been blackmailed several times.

The real government-sponsored candidate was identified later, and
the reasons for his nomination were found out, Mr Martirosyan said.

Pointless is also the proposal by one of the presidential candidates
Andrias Ghukasyan, who called on the other candidates to withdraw
from the presidential race and leave Armenia's incumbent President
    Serzh Sargsyan.

"We could have spoken of boycotting when, after the parliamentary
elections, the political forces would have refused to take their
seats because those elections were not better that other elections. So
boycott should have been set up after the elections," Mr Martirosyan
    said.

"However, we are now witnessing a process of nonparticipation rather
than a boycott. Under the circumstances, the incumbent president
would be re-elected without any problems," he said.

Mr Martirosyan has no comments on the Free Democrats party's decision
    against supporting Raffi Hovannisian.

"This does not in any way affect Raffi Hovannisian's election
campaign. He is a really leading candidate from the opposition,"
    Mr Martirosyan said.

He refused to say anything about the election campaign. "The election
campaign has not begun. Some tactical steps will be clear as soon as
    it begins."
