LITTLE SERINE ASKED SANTA CLAUS FOR A BATHROOM

Little Serine's Christmas dream differs from the dreams of her
contemporaries, she asked Santa Claus for a bathroom.
Serine's family, her grandmother Valya Avanesyan together with her
daughter-in-law and 4 grandchildren, lives in Qarin Tak village,
the region of Shoushi.
The 65-year-old grandmother has to earn the family's living. As she
says they were one of the prosperous families of the village, but the
Artsakh movement left its mark on their family, Valya's husband and
their three sons-in-law died in the war, their son died 7 years ago.
Mrs. Valya monthly gets a pension of 22 thousand drams, besides, the
children's allowance forms 84 thousand drams. The family of 6 members
lives on the mentioned income and the products of their vegetable
garden. They mainly grow potato and beans in their vegetable garden,
the other products they buy from the shops. "We often borrow the goods
but then as we get the children's allowance, we pay the debts. It is
very important that my grandchildren eat well and never be hungry.
That will be all right if they dress a bit poorly. Though the
children are ashamed but they are never hungry," the grandmother
states with regret.
Besides the vegetable garden Mrs. Valya has a cow and a pig but at
the New Year Eve, as the children's mothers says, they had to give
the pig to slaughter so that the children wouldn't be oppressed.
Together with their mother and grandmother the children have to go
to a relative's place to take a shower as they have no bathroom.
The Avanesyans applied to the regional administration several times
for their help to repair the house. They were provided tin-plate and
4 sacks of cement.
"If it had not been for the war we would live a prosperous life. Now
I want nothing, may we live in peace and may my children be healthy,"
says Mrs. Valya whose granddaughter continues to wait for her present
from Santa Claus saying, "I want a bathroom."
