Armenian politician explains who could take advantage of Hayrikyan death attempt

The assassination attempt against presidential candidate Paruyr
Hayrikyan could be in the interests of those who wished to have the
election date rescheduled, says David Hakobyan, the leader of the
    Marxist Party of Armenia.

Speaking to Tert.am, the politician said the masterminds of the plot
might have wished to take advantage of what he called a
`constitutional loophole' that allows for postponing elections or
    appointing a new voting.

`If doctors give information about him, there's no more need for
disturbing [people] or pretending to be a caretaker. I haven't gone to
him; he's having a rest. I looked through the patient report and
inquired of his health; everything is all right,' he told our
correspondent at the hospital where Hayrikyan is now receiving a
    post-surgery treatment.

Hayrikyan was hospitalized after being shot and injured in an
assassination attempt on Thursday night. He was operated on the
following morning. The candidate's condition is estimated
    satisfactory.

Under Article 52 of Armenia's Constitution, a presidential election is
postponed for a fortnight in case of insurmountable obstacles to a
candidate(s). In the event of a candidate's death, a new election is
    appointed.

Hayrikyan's relatives who were in hospital told our correspondent that
no politician visited him on Sunday.

Though the candidate himself initially announced that he cannot but
agree to the election postponement plan, he later said that he will
declare his final decision on Monday.
