HAYRIKYAN DEATH ATTEMPT NOT IN RIVALS' INTERESTS - DEBATE

The assassination attempt against presidential candidate Paruyr
Hayrikyan was not in the interests of his challengers in the current
election race, according to an Armenian political analyst.
Speaking at a Moscow-Yerevan video bridge on Thursday, Director of
the Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandaryan said Hayrikyan was not a
"favorite candidate" to be targeted by rivals.
The candidate was shot and wounded by unknown gunmen in central
Yerevan on Thursday night. The candidate is now under post-surgery
treatment in Yerevan's St. Gregory the Illuminator medical center.
Alexander Markarov, another expert attending the debate, agreed that
none of the other seven candidates would have benefited from the
gun attack.
"All condemned the incident, with some making calls for postponing
[the election]. But those mostly were people likely to garner less
than 5 percent of votes. They probably rely on a time-out in an
attempt to get more votes," he said.
Speaking further on the topic, President of the Russian Public
Institute of the Electoral Law Igor Borisov noted that the Armenian
legislation protects a candidate in such circumstances.
"Different mechanisms are normally resorted to in such cases. In the
event of a candidate's death, a close relative is allowed replace
him or her under different [countries'] laws," he explained.
Andrey Areshev, research fellow at the Black Sea-Caspian Region
Institute for Political and Social Studies, not in turn that the
vote delay would not be advantageous especially the ruling Republican
Party of Armenia.
The expert denied the circulating remarks that Russian forces could
have been be behind the hit. Considering the opinion unserious, Areshev
said the country never interferes in foreign states' domestic affairs.
