INTERNATIONAL CORPORATIONS MAY EXERT FINANCIAL PRESSURE ON ARMENIA BECAUSE OF THE LAW ON GMO

International corporations may exert financial pressure on Armenia
because of the law on genetically modified organisms (GMO), Head of
the Association "For Sustainable Human Development" Karine Danielyan
told ArmInfo.
The expert said that large international companies are behind the GMO
propaganda, and the issue should be discussed at the political level.
So, if the bill is adopted, the international corporations may exert
financial pressure on Armenia. Danielyan pointed out the lack of
surveys saying whether GMO seeds were imported to Armenia or not. "We
can only make our suggestions, as untypical sorts of tomatoes have
appeared in our market. One should not forget either that Armenia
received a great quantity of soybeans as a humanitarian aid, and 90%
of soybeans in the global market is genetically modified", she said.
She added that the law on GMO is a necessity for Armenia. The bill
implies a ban on importation and use of genetically modifies seeds.
Thereby the law will allow maintaining the endemic plants of Armenia.
"If we look at the issue from the environmental point of view, our
republic is the place where a number of species of plants originated.
If the seeds prove to be genetically modified, we'll lose our endemic
plants, and this will be not only our loss, but also a global loss",
she stressed. According to the environmentalists, the bill has already
been submitted to the Parliament.
