    ARMENIAN PRESIDENT SECURES REELECTION WITH 60% OF VOTES

    Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has secured a new term in office with
    about 60 percent of the ballots cast in the country~Rs presidential
    election, exit polls show.

    The Heritage Party~Rs leader Raffi Hovannisian, also trailed Sargsyan
    in second place with 32 percent of the votes, according to an exit poll
    by the Gallup Organization, reported by Armenian television on Monday.

    The exit poll was conducted among a representative sample of 19,130
    people at 122 polling stations across the country.

    Reports say that full preliminary results will be announced on Tuesday.

    This comes after more than 2.5 million eligible voters were expected
    to cast their ballots at 1,988 polling stations across the South
    Caucasian country in the presence of respectively 632 and 6,251
    international and local election observers.

    After casting his vote at a polling station in the capital, Yerevan,
    Sargsyan issued a statement saying that ~SI voted for the future
    of Armenia, for the security of Armenia, for the security of our
    citizens.~T

    The incumbent president is contesting six others in the election.

    Critics said earlier Sargsyan would not face any real competition,
    because all the credible opponents had withdrawn.

    The voter turnout stood at 69 percent in the previous presidential
    election in 2008.
