The Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) has effectively defended the street
protests of Raffi Hovannisian regarding the February 18 election
in which the opposition leader claims victory despite the official
declaration of incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan as winner.

In a statement issued on Monday the PAP led by tycoon Gagik Tsarukyan
also warned the authorities against using force against participants
in public rallies and marches during which Hovannisian is hailed as
the rightful winner of the ballot. It also urged the protesters to
remain peaceful and abide by laws during demonstrations.

The party which boasts the second largest faction in the National
Assembly but chose not to field a candidate in the presidential race
(nor endorse any of the race participants) said the street protests
have reflected "public distrust" in electoral processes and widespread
discontent with "injustice" and other government abuses.

"The PAP has been and will always be with the people. It believes
that it is the absolute right of every citizen of Armenia to demand
respect for their rights, including the electoral right," said the PAP.

"Being deeply aware of serious problems and challenges facing the
country, the Prosperous Armenia Party calls upon all influential
political forces to work out a democratic, political and economic
agenda of reforms and implementation of the road map. The Prosperous
Armenia Party is ready to provide all of its resources for the
organization and implementation of this process," it added.

After a press conference on Monday, Heritage Party leader Hovannisian
was asked to comment on the PAP statement. In his brief reply the
opposition leader said that he welcomed it, but added that the party
    could have elaborated its position.
