HERITAGE LEADER MAY CHALLENGE ELECTION RESULTS AT ARMENIA'S HIGHEST COURT

YEREVAN, February 25. / ARKA /. Opposition Zharangutyun (Heritage)
party leader, Raffi Hovannisian, said today he may challenge the
official results of the February 18 presidential election at the
Constitutional Court before March 2, when the deadline for doing
    so expires.

According to data, unveiled by CEC chairman Tigran Mukuchyan today,
the incumbent president Serzh Sargsyan had received 861,373 votes or
58.64% of the vote and was reelected for the second five-year term.

Raffi Hovannisian, head of the opposition Zharangutyun (Heritage)
party, came in second with 36.74% of the vote or 539,693 votes.

Hovannisian, who does not recognize the outcome of the election, has
been holding protest demonstrations across Armenia since February 20.

"We may ask the Constitutional Court to renounce the outcome of the
election, giving thus the last opportunity to its members to protect
the Constitution and the law," Hovannisian told local reporters today.

He added that he will form at Liberty Square, the venue of
demonstrations, a "transitional, democratic justice" before
constitutional order is established in the country. -0-
