NEONATOLOGISTS' INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN ARTSAKH

On July 18, the second international conference of neonatologists
(those dealing with the newborns' care) took place at the NKR
National Assembly. It was initiated by one of the best friends of
Artsakh, member of the House of Lords of the British Parliament
Baroness Caroline Cox and Director of Byosling British humanitarian
organization Kitty Mellor.
The conference was attended by first lady of Artsakh Anahit Sahakian,
wife of the NA Chairman Liana Ghulian, NKR Minister of Health Zoya
Lazarian, representatives of Centre for Maternal and Child Health
Care CJSC, pediatricians and British doctors. The conference was
coordinated by gynecologist of theCentre for Mother and Child Health
Care Edward Ghahramanian.
Greeting the participants on the occasion of the regular conference,
NKR Minister of Health Zoya Lazarian highly appreciated their mission,
noting the importance of holding similar scientific conferences in
Artsakh. And the sponsor of the conference was Lady Cox who paid the
79th visit to Artsakh. Being true to her principles, since the Artsakh
way years she has been making investments especially in the health
sphere. Thanks to her, the Rehabilitation Center was opened in 1988,
which was the requirement of the time. The Center gives the disabled
a chance to rehabilitate physically and morally and to become a full
member of the society. Zoya Lazarian expressed her gratitude to Lady
Cox for her great humanitarian mission, noting that her participation
in the conference wasn't accidental. It was via Lady Cox that Kitty
Mellor familiarized with Artsakh. For 13 years, Mrs.
Mellor has rendered great assistance to the people of Artsakh. In
2006, together with her husband, she established Byosling British
humanitarian organization and allocated her own funds for the
development of the neonatal service in Armenia and Artsakh.
Considering the importance of this program, she supplied the
Stepanakert children's hospital with the needed equipment and then
continued the program at the Center for Mother and Child Health Care.
According to the Health Minister, the work of the neonatal department
of the Stepanakert Maternity hospital is organized at a high level
and assistance is rendered not only to the kids born in the maternity
hospital, but also to the newborns from the regions. The neonatal
department is supplied with modern equipment, thanks to which the
lives of dozens of newborns were saved. For ensuring the program's
efficiency, it is necessary to increase the skills of the regional
hospitals' doctors, for which our British friends arrived in Artsakh.
"The importance of the program is testified also by the fact that
currently the medical establishments in Shushi, Martakert, Martuni,
Hadrut, and Kashatagh are supplied with 5 CosyCot respiratory therapy
devices, 2 of which were purchased on the state means. The Maternity
Hospital's neonatal department was again supplemented with some
devices. I'm sure that similar supply and availability of skillful
specialists will increase the level of the neonatal service in
Artsakh", said Minister Lazarian.
The Health Minister awarded Director of the Byosling British
humanitarian organization Kitty Mellor with a diploma for her
contribution to the NKR health system and continuous assistance
rendered to the neonatal service of the Republic.
During the conference, slides were also shown depicting the works
implemented over the years, and Caroline Cox, in turn, noted the
importance of the conference and expressed her respect and love for
the people of Artsakh, who not only survived, but could also rise
from ashes and work. The Baroness also expressed her deep gratitude to
Byosling organization, then presented to the British guests the Artsakh
people's struggle in the historical context and their achievements
after the establishment of the ceasefire and the independence. With
every visit, they see the progress here, especially in the sphere
of the newborns' health care. Lady Cox also noted that Armenia had
been the first nation to adopt Christianity; it experienced wars,
genocide, and earthquake, but always arose like a Phoenix, and she
admired the Armenian people's spirit. Also, she touched upon the
ethnic cleansing by Azerbaijan - the horrible events in Maragha
and other settlements. Those years, the hospitals were located
in the basements and there were no anesthetic drugs. The Baroness
witnessed in 1992 how surgeries were performed without anesthesia and
antibiotics. Since then, she decided to do everything for providing
the Artsakh people with medicines and equipment to reduce the human
suffering and pain. Currently, jointly with Mrs.
Kitty, they are trying to reach the international standards in the
sphere of infants' health care. Involved in this process, Mrs. Mellor
has visited Artsakh since 2000, implementing different programs on
infants' care, including those on training the local medical staff
in order that only healthy children are born in Artsakh.
Chairman of the conference Edward Ghahramanian presented to the
participants the statistic data on the newborns' deaths between 2008
and 2012. In 2012, the number of deaths increased by 31, causing
serious concern. That's why our British friends decided to provide
all the regions of Artsakh with modern equipment. According to the
statistics, during the first 28 days 4 million children die in the
world, two thirds of them dying during the first week of life.
Byoslingorganization's aim is to support all the babies who are born
with problems. The purpose of the conference was to promote a safe,
gentle and efficient activity related to infants' care to exclude death
cases. Thanks to our British friends, now it is possible in Artsakh to
save 900 ¬ 1000 gram-weight babies and care for them in the future. In
the second half of the conference the guests performed workshops. The
following speeches were made: Kitty Mellor - 'Temperature regulation',
Nick Connolly - 'Infants' further care and development', Inga Warren -
'High flow respiratory therapy', Lourace Smith - 'Oxygen treatment'.
At the end, the conference participants got certificates.
The next visit of the guests is planned after September 1, in the
framework of which trainings will be organized in the NKR regions
for the improvement of the neonatal service.
