TURKEY SETS KURDS AND ARMENIANS AGAINST EACH OTHER
It is possible that the price of Bashar Assad's rule in Syria will be
the emergence of Kurdish autonomy on part of the Syrian territory. It
is already becoming reality, and the question is whether it has been
set up at the price of toppling Assad or upon his approval. Assad
stated that he will not allow collapse of the state. However, in 2014
his term will end.
Recently Turkey was visited by the leader of the main Syrian Kurdish
party Partiya Yekîtiya Demokrat (PYD) Salex Muslim. The establishment
of the Kurdish autonomy in Syria was discussed. Being formally against,
Turkey supported formation of such autonomy in Syria and Iraq. On
these days the prime minister of the government of Kurdistan (KRG)
Nechirvan Barzani will visit Turkey.
The Turkish government still hopes that the Kurdish movement will
be limited to Syria and Iraq and will not affect Turkey. Although in
Ankara they continue to fight, they understand that fragmentation of
the country and emergence of Kurdistan is becoming more realistic.
Ankara is preparing Plan B, latently making Kurds think about autonomy
in the territory of Western Armenia. Turkey will thereby set Kurds
and Armenians against each other.
Armenia does not express its stance on the possibility of establishment
of the Kurdish state and Turkey's fragmentation. The only official
reaction is Prosecutor General Aghvan Hovsepyan's ambitious
statement. He said that Armenia is likely to put forth territorial
claims to Turkey.
In a month after this statement the MFA of Armenia tried to alleviate
it, repeating that Armenia is ready (still) to improve relations with
Turkey without preconditions. Obviously, however, in case the Kurdish
movement shifts to Turkey, Armenia will put forth preconditions,
and the international community will not object.
