ARMENIAN AGRICULTURAL MINISTER PREDICTS UNPRECEDENTED WHEAT HARVEST

YEREVAN, AUGUST 1, ARMENPRESS: Government of the Republic of Armenia
during August 1 session confirmed the program of autumn wheat and
highly productive seed program for 2013-2014. "Armenpress" reports that
by the program will be continued the import of high quality seeds and
giving it to villagers under the aim of reproduction. Prime Minister
of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan ordered to stress with separate point that
the laboratory examination of the seed is obligatory. "We should not
have any doubts on elite quality of the seed," he said.
Minister of Agriculture Sergo Karapetyan said that the seed is
subjected to laboratory examination. He informed that this year
unprecedented wheat harvest is expected.
By the program is planned to sign contracts with beneficiaries
included in the program during the period 2013-2018 for organizing
corresponding seed production. For 2013 is planned buying 540 tones
elite quality autumn wheat from Russia and 1950 tones from local seed
producers. The total amount of money is 381 200 USD.
Each year in the republic is used 528 000 - 581 000 tones of wheat
and local production volumes in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 were
correspondingly 198,1, 183,5, 224 and 243 thousand tones or 34.7 -
41.8 percent of the wheat used in the country. The later is very
low indicator.
