OMBUDSMAN SUGGESTS CHIEF OF POLICE ENSURING SAFETY OF DEMONSTRATORS IN FRONT OF THE MAYOR'S OFFICE

    Aug 8 2013

Yerevan, August 8. /Mediamax/. Armenian Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan
suggested Chief of Police Vladimir Gasparyan assigning relevant
officials to ensure the safety and health of those taking part in
the sit-in in front of Yerevan Mayor's Office.

The activists holding demonstration in front of Mayor's Office sent
a letter to Ombudsman on August 5 noting the lack of opportunity to
protect themselves from scorching sun, the Ombudsman's Office reports.

Karen Andreasyan notes in the message addressed to the Chief of Police
that "placement of a sunshade is both legal and human".

"We have already noted and substantiated on other occasions that
placement of a tent or sunshade during peaceful demonstrations can't
be considered as illegal if it's necessary to protect the life and
health of the demonstrators and if they don't interfere traffic or
    pedestrians", the Ombudsman's message reads.

Besides, Karen Andreasyan proposed the Chief of Police to strengthen
the measures for ensuring the demonstrators' security when it's dark.
