COURT DISMISSES MOTION ON RELEASE OF ARMENIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS ACTIVIST TIGRAN ARAKELYAN
    by Ashot Safaryan

    ARMINFO
    Friday, August 9, 21:30

On August 9 the Armenian Court of Appeal proceeded with the discussion
of the case of 4 activists of the opposition Armenian National
Congress. Judge Yeva Darbinyan dismissed the motion on Tigran
Arakelyan's release. Tigran Arakelyan claims that he was put under
    arrest groundlessly.

To note, the ANC activists were arrested following the 9 Aug
2011 incident with law-enforcers near the Swan Lake in the center
of Yerevan. The law enforcers were checking the documents of the
passers-by, and the activists demanded that the police should ground
their actions. The police detained and beat them.

Arakelyan was sentenced to six years, Karapetyan to three years,
Sargis Gevorgyan and David Kiramijyan to two years in jail. The ANC
said the court's verdict was politically motivated and refused to
have any dialogue with the authorities.
