SYRIA DEVELOPMENTS MAY PROVE ALL-ARMENIAN TRAGEDY - EXPERT

In an interview with Tert.am Chairman of the Political Scientists
Union of Armenia Hmayak Hovannisyan shared his opinion of the impact
the US invasion of Syria and related development may have on the
region and on Armenia.
Commenting on Armenian former deputy FM Arman Navasardyan's opinion
that the Syria problem may have serious consequences for the other
regional countries, Hovhannisyan said that Navasardyan was Armenian
ambassador to Syria and is well informed.
"I share the opinion that the expected developments can have
far-reaching consequences and destabilize the region. They are most
dangerous for the South Caucasus countries. The developments may have
a knock-on effect on our neighbors - Iran, Turkey and Iraq. Moreover,
Iran, which is Syria's ally supporting Bashar Assad, may be directly
drawn into the hostilities," Hovannisyan said.
As regards threats to Armenia, the expert believes that the war in
Syria may have its impact on Lebanon, with its Armenian community. It
may prove to be a second blow, because Hezbollah is based in Lebanon.
And if Lebanon is drawn into this destabilization process - and is
actually is - hostilities may break out develop there as well. The
Armenian community in Syria has, in fact, broken up because of the
tragedy, and the Armenian community in Lebanon may share the fate. It
will prove to be an all-Armenian tragedy.
"This is a serious challenge for Armenia as the Homeland of all
Armenians. Our interests are directly involved," Hovannisyan said.
With respect to Russia's statement on non-interference, the expert
said that "The Izvestia is a serious newspaper that published Bashar
Assad's article. The newspaper is a mouthpiece of Russia's authorities,
and Assad presents his stance - determined resistance to any external
interference."
On the other hand, Russian FM Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia has no
intention to interfere. He calls on western nations not to interfere
as well.
Hovannisyan still hopes because the Pentagon clearly stated that
interference is only possible with US President Barack Obama's
consent. The expert thinks that the US president will not make that
step. He is a Nobel peace prize winner after all.
"Let us not forget that, according to poll results, only nine percent
of US citizens support foreign interference in Syria's affairs,
whereas 60% of them supported actions against Iraq. In any case,
it may have most serious consequences not only for Armenians, but
also for all the peoples in the region," Hovannisyan said.
