WHY THE REPUBLIC WAS NOT CELEBRATED JUBILANTLY

Republic Day, marking the founding of the Turkish Republic on Oct. 29,
1923, was celebrated with reserved ceremonies across the country and in
the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) rather than joyful ones.
One of my friends called the situation "poignant emotionlessness." A
great majority of the public has been indifferent to Republic Day
celebrations. Cooperation between the public and the government
continued during the Turkish War of Independence but stopped when
Turkey gained victory. Devout Sunni Muslims witnessed dervish lodges
being closed down while religious officials were executed after the
victory. The Kurdish people who resisted the French siege during the
war faced anguished massacres and denial of their existence by the
government. Armenian, Greek and other minorities were "otherized"
while they were waiting for the government to bind their wounds.
