ENVIRONMENTALIST NAMES MOST POLLUTED RIVERS OF ARMENIA AND YEREVAN

    17:30 ~U 14.11.13

Akhtala is the most polluted river on the territory of Armenia, an
environmentalist has said, with the water in river Hrazdan remaining
the most contaminated in capital Yerevan.

According to Lianna Margaryan, the head of the Environment Impact
Monitoring Center, the water pollution level in the country has been
determined by a 5-point grading scale since 2007.

"The monitoring results suggest that the rivers in Armenia correspond
to the second or third level of purity. There are few rivers or river
sections where the pollution level could fall within Level 4 or Level
5 categories," she told a news conference on Thursday.

Margaryan said that the ammonium hydrate is the main pollutant in
    the rivers of Armenia.

"In terms of other parameters, the river content is close to the
third or fourth levels. Ammonium hydrate is the only [substance]
leading to a fifth-degree pollution," she said, adding that none of
the rivers in the country have been found to contain life-threatening
heavy metals like lead or arsenic.
