Absolute democracy is my gift to my nation, says politician

    16:48 - 03.01.14

The National Self-Determination Union party's leader says he really
wants to believe that all efforts towards instilling democracy in
    people will succeed this year.

`My gift to our nation is the idea of absolute democracy incorporated
in books, and I do want to believe that we will be able to mature more
the people's ideas in this direction. People form the foundations of
the state, so the adoption of this principle may strictly distinguish
Armenia from the other nations around the world,' Paruyr Hayrikyan
    told Tert.am.

The politician said he thinks Armenia will largely contribute to the
international politics, as well as attract more supporters, by relying
on democracy as a starting principle.

Asked about the most prosperous year which he thinks Armenia has seen
    since gaining independence, Hayrikyan replied,

`This question should be looked upon from different angles. The most
important thing after [adopting] the Declaration of Independence was
the independence referendum, and on September 21 [1991], our nation
collectively said `yes' to the idea of independence. Then we saw 1992,
which marked the army building period. 1995 can be considered more
important in terms of creating the Constitution; 1998 was the year of
first fair election. I say faire because its first round saw none of
the candidates not only win but also gain a significant advantage over
the other. That has been the only fair election so far.'

As for the 2005 constitutional reforms, the politician said they also
marked a certain progress in terns of amending what he called
    dictatorial provisions.

Hayrikyan further spoke of Armenia's EU integration efforts,
considering them very important but not successful. `We cannot,
unfortunately, single out any year as a year of reforms because
despite the certain degree of success in our lives, we haven't seen a
progress all in all but just vice versa,' he noted.
