ARMENIA'S AUTHORITIES MUST DRAW LESSONS FROM UKRAINE DEVELOPMENTS

Ukraine developments have increased the risk of Armenia being drawn
into the West's games, Heritage party member Styopa Safaryan told
Tert.am.
Maidan may be an example to Armenian citizens discontented with
Armenia's authorities, as an oligarchic system is in power in Armenia
as well.
"Everything depends on the West, which has just expressed its wish
to continue Armenia-EU relations. On the other hand, Armenia has not
shown any signs of losing anything. So the West's demands and actions
can hardly be predicted now," he said.
"Armenia's authorities must draw lessons from the Ukraine
developments. They must realize that the end to their oppressing the
people is coming rather than try to prevent development similar to
those in Ukraine," Safaryan said.
He stressed the importance of the people's stance.
"If the people are sure their struggle will succeed, the authorities
may change their behavior. But Armenia's authorities will certainly
feel fears as they are well aware of Europe's policy aimed at
disrupting Russia's policy. And Armenia is one of the targets.
Therefore, Armenia's authorities will face danger if they remain
committed to their policy," Safaryan said.
Political scientist Levon Shirinyan believes that the Ukraine scenario
similar will not unfold in Armenia because of different ways of
thinking.
"Well aware of our geopolitical location, Armenia's authorities must
come to realize that giving power to criminal elements will have bad
consequences for them. Urgent reforms are needed to meet the people's
demands. In this case, I think we will be spared shocks.
Armenia's political elite must propose a reform programs, with
Ukraine's example considered," Shirinyan said.
Russia has its economic interests and is sure to say its say.
"Russia will not sit on its hands. It is running the risk of losing
the Dombas industrial zone and access to the Black Sea fleet. It
means Russia's death as a superpower."
