Poladyan: Interpreters at V. Petrosyan trial receive severe reprimand

    Tuesday, May 27, 2014

The interpreters participating in a court hearing of the comedian
Vardan Petrosyan 's case have received severe reprimands for poor
interpretation into French. The Head of Armenia's Judicial Department
Karen Poladyan made this announcement in the Armenian parliament
today, when responding to a question of deputy of Republican Party of
    Armenia (HHK) faction Khosrov Harutyunyan.

    K. Harutyunyan said in particular that it was evident at the latest
court sitting that the interpreter did not have a good command of
French. He asked if 15 million drams allocated to the Judicial
Departmnent can be used to hire good interpreters whose
professionalism could ensure the efficiency of the trial.

Poladyan replied that annual contests of interpreters are held, and in
2014 Vi Group was announced the winner.
As for the interpretation during the trial of Vardan Petrosyan,
Poladyan noted that the judge already sent a letter to the Judicial
    Department in this connection.

"It was a technical problem. The interpreter is fluent in written
French, but has difficulty interpreting," the Judicial Department head
    explained.

The HHK deputy noted that he considers a severe reprimand to be insufficient.

We would remind you that the court hearing of Vardan Petrosyan was
adjourned as the interpreter could not interpret properly for
Petrosyan's French lawyer Marie Laure Dose.

Comedian, actor Vardan Petrosyan was arrested in November 2013 on
charges of causing a road accident that killed two people.
