ARMENIAN OFFICIAL SAYS UN VOTE ON CRIMEA WAS NOT RECOGNITION

Armenia was voting for its principles rather than against Ukraine
or for Russia during the UN vote on Crimea, Deputy Foreign Minister
Karen Nazarian said on Thursday.
Speaking in the Armenian parliament, Nazarian, who was the country's
permanent representative to the United Nations during the March 27
vote, said that by its stance Armenia did not recognize Crimea's
secession from Ukraine, but simply backed the principle of people's
self-determination that has long been advocated by Yerevan in the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
"From the very first day of independence, the Republic of Armenia never
questioned the principle of nations' right to self-determination as
a fundamental principle of international law. We did not vote against
Ukraine or for Russia. We voted for our principles," he said.
The resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly by a vote of 100 to
11, with 58 abstentions, denounced as illegal a disputed referendum
that led to Crimea's secession from Ukraine and becoming part of
Russia.
