MORE BEER CONSUMED IN ARMENIA AS FIFA CUP CONTINUES

Beer, which is thought to be the world's third most popular drink
after coffee and tea, is consumed more frequently in the summer season,
especially during football championships.
Tert.am has tried to conduct a survey among beer breweries and several
Yerevan-based pubs to know what impact the 2014 World Cup had on the
beer consumption volumes.
Ruzanna Shmavonyan, a manager at PUB 37, said beer is always widely
consumed in their club despite football matches. "There has been
probably a 10%-15% increase," she told our correspondent, adding that
appetizers have also become more popular in this period.
Pubs are normally overcrowded in the period of football cups, with
all the tables being booked 3-4 days in advance. "We do not have
vacant room for today's match and the Sunday final," the manager added.
Speaking to Tert.am, Beer Academy's founder, Gagik Torosyan refused
to linked the increased number of customers with the FIFA cup. "More
beer is consumed, along with the increasing number of customers,
but I do not want to link that with football. I hope [beer] will be
consumed in the same volumes on 'non-football days' as well, because
on the days there were no football matches, the purchase quantity
was the same and even higher," he noted.
The managers of two supermarkets, who preferred to remain unidentified,
admitted that they have sold 40% more beer since the championship's
start.
Of the three beer breweries in Armenia, only one, Cilicia, agreed to
speak on the production volumes, without mentioning absolute figures.
Sources from the company said that they have released more bottled
beer in this season.
Asked whether they had in mind the summer period and the World Cup,
the sources replied that they decide on the production volumes
depending on the demand.
